feminist pro wrestling

Finding tongue-in-cheek ways to point out wrestling's socially uncomfortable faux pas, one flash card at a time.

mr-faghitch asked: So, what happened with AJ on RAW tonight is practically a gold mine for you, right?

Hah!

Honestly, as concerned as I am about what I watch when I watch wrestling, I also tend to pick my battles. So I’m torn over the AJ angle.

I’m hoping it will end with AJ swerving the audience and showing us that not only is she in complete control of her actions, but she wants to be devious and deceptive, and appearing mopey and mentally unstable was all part of some Master Plan. I’d even be okay with AJ and Daniel Bryan becoming Christian/Trish 2.0: horrible people who continually harass and sabotage their enemies and whose only loyalty is to each other.

Those outcomes are rife with issues as well. Mostly that AJ’s heel turn would likely be credited to her gender (I can already hear the “Jezebel” comments from Lawler) instead of her personal character.

But I vastly prefer AJ as the second coming of Evil Trish. Because it’s better than AJ, the innocent led astray by jerks, or AJ, the CRAZY ex with a capital CRAZY, or AJ, the Bella clone who assumes her life is over because her man dumped her and is now behaving recklessly so she’ll “feel something again”, or AJ, the woman who LIKES it when men verbally abuse or physically intimidate her (eesh).

TL;DR - AJ needs agency in order for this angle to be not-god-awful.

nchammer326 asked: Two questions: First, are you going to be doing any more in-depth stuff like that graphic of WWE champions, maybe writing a post about issues in wrestling, or linking to relevant articles? I don't mind the "hey mark" stuff, but I like well thought-out analyses. Second, any chance you could do something similar to that previously mentioned graphic, but for different titles (heavyweight, intercontinental, women's/divas, etc.)?

I’m definitely going to do graphics for the histories of multiple belts. I’ve already rounded up pictures! It’s mostly a matter of finding the time to make them and learning to be more proficient with image editing programs. Embarrassingly enough, the champ graphic took me about two weeks to make.

As for writing articles, I’ve thought about it, but I don’t want to commit to anything only to not follow through. My offline life is rather hectic, so I’d want to take my time in wording things just right. It’s a possibility, though.

And thank you for the question, I’m flattered that you’d want to read anything I write. :)

ereyes312 asked: First off, I just wanna say that I love your blog! Secondly, are you going to do cultural appropriation and blackface flash cards? Because I know that shit's been done in wrestling. :\

Thank you so much! I’m sorry that I’ve taken so long to answer this question. I definitely have plans to do a card about cultural appropriation. It’s just a matter of trying to word things right. Plus I recently lost my graphics editing program and had to get a new one, and I’m still getting used to it. I will try to have one up by tomorrow. :)

News, everyone! I’ve put up a General FAQ on the side bar, and I’ve updated the “why am I taking this seriously” page and changed it to Blog FAQ. If there is anything you feel I have not addressed, do not hesitate to ask. Enjoy your weekends!

Hello again

Thank you for the overwhelming positivity I have received in the last few weeks, both through the blog and in my inbox. A special thank you to Brandon Stroud for advertising this blog on his column, which you should totally check out.

To anyone who still wonders why I am taking wrestling so seriously, there is a link on the sidebar that I have labeled more clearly. Hopefully I have answered any questions you have to some satisfaction, and if not, I’m currently working on another page to go along with it.

As for the anonymous people who’ve left me hateful, anti-feminist comments, all I can say is that I hope you are enjoying your tumblr experience as much as I am enjoying my own. :) As it is, I don’t update much, so it’s pretty easy to avoid me.
